That’s how we make a difference !
“The EAT–Lancet diet is a plant-based diet that aims to provide a healthy diet for people while also being sustainable for the planet. “
It has been announced officially by the EAT lancet report - The Lancet is a weekly peer-reviewed general medical journal and one of the oldest of its kind; It is also one of the world's highest-impact academic journals.[1][2] It was founded in England in 1823.[3]” (wikipedia)
There are many reasons to think about how we eat, striving to eat food that is in-line with living more sustainably, that is healthy and healing for us and for the planet.
There are a few things I would like to mention about how to think about what we eat:
Local and Seasonal Eating
Supporting local farmers and consuming seasonal produce helps reduce the carbon footprint associated with transporting food over long distances. It also allows for fresher, more nutritious options while strengthening local economies. By eating with the seasons, people are more in tune with the rhythms of nature and can help preserve biodiversity by encouraging the growth of diverse crops.
Waste Reduction
A major concern in the global food system is food waste, which contributes to environmental degradation, wasted resources, and increased carbon emissions. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), about one-third of all food produced globally is wasted. Sustainable food practices involve reducing food waste through better planning, proper storage, and composting, as well as repurposing food scraps into creative meals.
We can summarise with 7 point of how to think about food :
~ choose seasonal food - the seasons affect us and nature provides food to match our seasonal needs - for example citrus in winter that is high in vit c for strengthening the immune system…
~ local food - grown in the climate where you live and supporting local economy and barter.
~ whole - food that is in its whole state, in its natural original form - unprocessed.
~ traditional - the food your genes are made of, think about what your grandmother ate and the food your ancestors cooked, indigenous foods, recipes from family cookbooks… these foods are the foods we know.
~ balanced - balance of all the nutrition components that the body needs, eat some protein, some carbs and fats, also keep vitamins from fresh fruits and vegetables and herbs of course - drinking herbal teas and using herbs for home medicine ( find some instructions in your grandma's stories :) )
~ fresh - fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds. not out of a can or frozen - with life force in it.
~ delicious - enjoying our food aids digestion and good mental health.
And a bonus tip - Give Thanks - it keeps us humble - we are absolutely dependent on our mother - planet earth - she is giving us the healthiest food.
Natural Food Vs Processed
Follow nature and you will live well. The food that is natural and unprocessed is the right food to eat, when society decided to turn food into a commodity we started getting sick. Turning food into products on the shelf. Food is sacred. We are using food in religious holidays and weddings to celebrate and commemorate. We need to remember what food means to us.
If we follow indigenous people around the globe we will find that they/we know how to find food and this food is the healthiest.
Avoid processed food as much as you can, the transition can be slow and you can forgive yourself while choosing to change your diet, remembering that processed food is high in sugar which is very addictive so take it easy on yourself. Your body will soon tell you which food you want! Health is our natural state and we feel so good and natural when we are healthy.
Waste minimisation and Environmental impact
here are a few tips to reduce waste:
~ cook a small amount or freeze access to ensure that cooked food is not going to waste
~ use all parts of the vegetable - stems and skins, and put bits that are hard or unreadable in a pot to make stock that can be used in soups and sauces.
~ Buy fresh produce rather than canned or frozen produce - so you don’t need to worry about recycling packages.
